General: (Waitrose on Wikipedia)
Waitrose is the supermarket division of the John Lewis Partnership, with 187 branches as of December 2007. Like the partnership's department stores, Waitrose is targeted at the middle class market, emphasising quality food and customer service rather than low prices (their slogan reflects this: "Quality food, honestly priced"). Waitrose's main competitors in this market are Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury's. It currently has a 4% share of the food market, and additionally a 16% and 10% share of the organic food and wet fish markets respectively.
Good opinions: Inexistent / Insignificant
Bad opinions: Waitrose selling fake Berkshire pork, Waitrose on Blagger
Our Remarks (PROS): Great variety of products.
CORPORATE
Social Responsibility: "Every two years we provide detailed reports for our business. In the intervening years, a summary report for the Partnership is produced. These summary reports are aimed at our Partners, but are also made publicly available. All our reports set out our policies and principles and summarise how we are managing our environmental impacts, how we are working with suppliers and local communities, and how our employees or Partners contribute to and share in the rewards of our commercial success.

Environmental Responsibility: "As retailers of electrical and electronic products, both John Lewis and Waitrose fully support this regulation, and we have joined together with some of the UK’s leading electrical retailers to create and fund a new body - the Distributor Take-Back (DTS) scheme - which is helping to develop a new UK recycling network for waste electrical products. Over the next three years the scheme will make available more than £10 million to establish and upgrade recycling facilities across the UK, so that customers can conveniently recycle old electrical appliances."

Official description of Waitrose

Waitrose Website

At Waitrose, we combine the convenience of a supermarket with the expertise and service of a specialist shop.

Above all we take pride in the freshness and quality of our food.

It is what our customers want, and it is what gives us our edge over other supermarkets.

Of vital importance to us is the provenance and traceability of the food that is on our shelves. Each of our buyers is an expert in his or her own field. Their job is to seek out the best sources of the best quality food and unusual ingredients that can't be found in other supermarkets.

Much of their time is spent with the farmers, growers and suppliers, building relationships based on trust and respect. Wherever possible our buyers buy British. Increasingly, they are also sourcing local produce from small growers and suppliers close to individual Waitrose stores.
